I'm not a soccer fan. I find it a very boring game to watch and frustrating to attempt to play. I hate watching the men's soccer on tv, the way they fling themselves to the ground, writhing in agony and then magically recover once the penalty has been paid.
So imagine my surprise when I realised that one of the highlights of my week is going to watch Ruby play soccer on a Saturday morning. Usually Brett and I go together, or, if I'm working and my home visits are in the vicinity of the soccer ground she's playing at, I'll stop off in my lunch hour and watch for a little while. We've been mostly lucky with the weather, and we sit, rugged up at the sidelines, on our camp chairs, drinking coffee and hot chocolate from the coffee van, cheering on Ruby's team, Wollongong Olympic Under 10's girls. There are some really good little players on the team, and Ruby is improving every week. Every now and then she makes a play that surprises us, like a really decent kick down the field or a nifty little toe kick that diverts an opposing goal attempt.
Life is pretty good right now.
