The title says it all. The psychiatrist appointment was slightly disappointing, but I think that's because I'm getting tired of all this back and forth. We came away with a couple of things; firstly, Declan is almost certainly within the autistic spectrum (which doesn't say much as it is incredibly broad), secondly, we can't say definitively it's Aspergers, but neither can we rule it out. So that's as clear as mud! Still to come are IQ tests and probably a referral to an Occupational Therapist. If it wasn't for the fact that Declan obviously finds it difficult at school in certain situations, I wouldn't even bother. He is certainly not 'impaired' in anyway. But these traits and characteristics that he has that were cute as a 4 year old are losing their cuteness at 7 and a half. For example, his literal take on things. The psychiatrist asked Declan, "Who's your teacher?", to which he responded. "Mrs Low." The next question was "And what's she like?", and Declan answered, "Well, she's a woman." In other contexts, with someone who didn't know him, that could come across as being a real little smart arse, when in fact he's just answering the question.
So, anyway, I'm pretty sure we'll never get a black and white answer, but there is enough there to warrant that Dexie can get some extra support in school, and the teachers will know that he is just a bit on the quirky side, and really, that's all I want.
Last weekend was my brother's wedding, so a very happy and busy day. It was held at a beautiful venue called "The Gunnery Tea Rooms" part of an old army barracks from the 1800's, with a beautiful sandstone house and sweeping views right up the harbour. The kids were thrilled because the grounds were riddled with tunnels through the cliffs to the old store rooms, hospital etc, and my cousins, who are now 17 and 16 took them all exploring. The boys had black suits on, so they played they were at Hogwarts. The ceremony was lovely, the speeches just slightly long winded.... I got to catch up with a lot of old family/ school friends I hadn't seen in years, so it was a lot of fun. And at the very end, as Josh and Sarah were leaving, we all made a tunnel with our arms for them the run through, and right at the door as they went through, Sarah handed her bouquet to Ruby, who almost screamed with delight, and she ran out after them calling "Goodbye! Goodbye!"
