Kirrhi

I am craving the warmth like a plant turning towards the sun. I hate, hate, hate August, the most miserable moth of the year. It is always cold, and rainy and windy, but at the same time the days are getting longer, so you feel tricked into believing that it's warmer. I am tired of being cold, and of having the heater on, and of wearing layers of clothes. I would not be a good candidate for living somewhere REALLY cold- although I think half the problem is that our winter is not so severe that you really prepare for it. Sure, you have a few jumpers and long pants, but no one wears gloves and coats and hats. Maybe we should.

It is been almost a whole month of illness now. Declan is home sick today, he has been since Monday, and I doubt I will send him back to school before next week. I am slowly recovering after my brush with this awful flu virus. I spent last weekend in bed, too sick to move. It was horrible, I haven't felt that bad in years and years. At one stage I was just lying there with tears seeping from under my eyelids, surrendering to how bad I actually felt. I wanted to brandish sharp sticks at people who tell you that they have the flu, when they actually just have a cold, because I'm telling you, the really REAL flu is nothing like a freaking cold.

Anyway, enough of that. Some cool news is that Declan won a competition at school to name their mascot, which is a Tawny Frogmouth Owl. (Although strictly speaking it's not actually an owl, the same as a koala is not a bear.) The whole school, 230 kids, got to nominate a name, and then a few were picked as finalists and then at assembly last Friday the name was announced, and Dexie won!! The name he chose was "Kirrhi" which is an Aboriginal word meaning skillful. And as the school is Keiraville PS, it sounds pretty good together. I had found the name in a list on the internet and Dexie had decided that he liked it, so had written it on his entry form. He had to get up infront of the whole school at the assembly to accept his prize, which was a plush tawny frogmouth toy. Needless to say he was very proud!!
