So it turns out that Ruby does not have coeliac disease. I'm really relieved about that. It was awful thinking about how limited her diet may have to become. The biopsy itself went well, just a 20 minute procedure under general anaesthetic which Ruby coped well with. Even though everything was normal, the specialist wants to keep an eye on her and have us repeat all the blood tests in 6 months if she is still having pain. One of Ruby's cousins has severe Crohns disease and because of that history we have to be careful. Apparently people with Crohn's can have totally normal results for years and then become acutely unwell. Comforting! The next step is having an appointment with a dietician and putting Ruby on an elimination diet to see if we can identify a culprit in some kind of food. I still think there is some kind of gluten/wheat thing going on, but Ruby chops and changes with her story all the time. One day she's saying her tummy hurts all the time and the next day she'll tell you it never hurts. I'm a tiny bit over it all.
Winter is creeping up on us again, we have had our first really cold days this week and I've got the flannelette sheets out again. One of the best things about doing night shift in winter is the thought of coming home to a warm bed with cosy sheets. Ah... it's the little things.
We have planned a holiday to Tasmania in September, which I'm really looking forward to. I haven't been there in years, and never with Brett and the kids. We are basically doing a tour of the whole island, hiring a car and driving around. We're also having a couple of days in Melbourne on the way there. I think it will be pretty cold at that time of year, but I'm sure the scenery will be spectacular.
