Oh, i had such a proud parenting moment the other day. All my years of tight-arseness has finally, finally paid off and my children understand the value of a dollar! You may or may not be aware that I am the biggest penny pincher ever, and also the meanest mother, a badge I wear with great pride. My kids get a choice of Weetbix or porridge during the school terms, but in the holidays they get to choose a 'special' cereal to have instead. (And I mourn the days when I could pass cornflakes off as a special cereal, but there you go.) Anyway, these holidays they decided that they wanted the new Milo cereal called Duo that has milo flakes AND vanilla flakes! Whooppee! So I promised that I would get this cereal when I went shopping. Well, do you know how much that bloody stuff costs? For a tiny little 375gm box it was like six bucks!! I could have got the normal milo cereal on sale for $5 for a big family sized box, but I didn't, I bought the Duo. Great anticipation the next morning and exclaiming over the two toned flakes. Then half way through breakfast, Simon said, "You know, mum? I don't really like these white flakes. I think I'll just leave them."
I turned slowly from doing the dishes and flapped a soapy washing up glove. "Do you realise how expensive that cereal is?" I asked "And you wanted it! There is no way you are going to waste half of it because you don't like the white flakes!"
Simon looked at me with big blue eyes and I could see his little mind whirring. "I know!" he said, only slightly frantically, "I'll eat all the brown flakes, and then I'll give the rest to Ruby and Declan!" He picked up his bowl and started scraping the dregs into the other two's bowls. "Oh cool!" Declan said happily.
"That way, Mum," Simon said soothingly, "It's not a waste of money, is it?"
That's my boy!

(And here is a picture from the wedding, and yes, i do look fairly pregnant.)
